In the morning, before training, I didn't eat heavy — I'd have a vitamina: banana, ripe mamão, milk, well chilled and thick. It fills the belly, gives you energy without weighing you down, and with the heat here it's perfect. My body was my machine as much as the car, so I respected it. Fruits from my country, simple — but that's what kept me at the top.

- •Papaya (mamão) — a piece (sweetness and vitamins)

Why this dish? As a top-level athlete, Senna had to recharge energy and minerals. In Brazil, the "vitamina" — a tropical fruit smoothie with milk — is the natural morning and post-exertion restorative: a concentrated dose of potassium and vitamins perfectly suited to the extreme physical demands of F1.

How it was made : The "vitamina" became popular in Brazilian households in the 20th century with the spread of electric blenders, extending a long tradition of tropical fruit juices. Banana and papaya, abundant and cheap, made it the quintessential popular energy breakfast, long before the global smoothie trend.
The contemporary twist : Add a spoonful of peanut butter and serve in a graduated bottle like a "race-day energy ration."
