The Konkani meal on a banana leaf (Oota)
In Konkani families from the Karnataka coast, where Deepika Padukone's roots lie, the meal is served flat on a banana leaf or in bowls arranged around a mound of rice. There are no separate starters or desserts: everything arrives together — a comforting dal, a fish or vegetable preparation with coconut, a tangy drink, and on festive days, a steamed sweet. You eat with your right hand, mixing rice and sauces with each bite, balancing sweet, sour, and spicy flavors on a single platter.
Signature : Kokum (amsul) and coconut milk
The coastal cuisine of Karnataka and the Konkan coast owes its soul to two ingredients: kokum, a dark purple dried fruit that adds fruity acidity and a lovely pink tint where others use tamarind or lemon, and freshly pressed coconut milk that softens the chili heat. Together, they create the tangy-creamy-spicy contrast typical of Mangalorean tables.
