Havis and Prasāda — The Vedic Offering of Yajna
In the Hindu tradition, of which Brahmā is the creator and master of the Vedas, the meal is not conceived as starter-main-dessert but around the yajna, the fire sacrifice. First, the havis is prepared — the substances offered into the flames (rice cakes, ghee, grains) — then the naivedya, the food presented to the deity, which then descends to the faithful as prasāda, the blessed portion shared. Ghee (clarified butter) flows everywhere: it connects the mortal, the rite, and the divine. These preparations are offered here in a spirit of 'inspired by', not as a reproduction of a living sacred rite.
Signature : Ghṛta (Ghee), Clarified Butter of the Sacrifices
Clarified butter is THE substance of Vedic offerings: poured into the fire, it nourishes the gods; mixed with grains and milk, it sanctifies every dish. Brahmā himself, it is said, feeds on the essence of the ghee offered. It is the signature ingredient that connects all these recipes.
