Back to Charlie Chaplin
The London Worker's Meal and 'Tea'
In the poor London where Chaplin grew up, there was no talk of starter-main-dessert. The day revolved around a hot dinner at midday (boiled meat, root vegetables, pudding boiled in a cloth), bread with dripping to fill the gaps, the late-afternoon high tea (strong tea, bread, sometimes a herring), and the pie shops of Kennington and Lambeth where you stood to eat a pie and mash. Sweet pudding only appeared in a big way at celebrations.
