Sharing the bush according to the Law (totemic bush tucker)
In the Dreamtime, there is no starter, main course or dessert: there is only what the land, water and sky give through the seasons, shared according to the Law instituted by Baiame. The meal revolves around the clan's totem (which forbids certain prey), women's gathering (seeds, fruits, tubers, larvae) and men's hunting (kangaroo, emu, fish). Food is cooked in an earth oven or under ashes, seeds are ground on stone, and everything is shared on the ground, each portion going to each according to their rank and role. To eat here is to obey the order that the Sky Father has laid down.
Signature : The grinding stone and the earth oven
Two immemorial gestures connect this entire table: grinding native grass seeds on a sandstone millstone — one of the world's oldest skills, attested for tens of thousands of years in southeastern Australia — and steam-cooking in an earth oven, a pit lined with fire-heated stones. No spice from elsewhere: the signature is the mastery of slow fire and wild seed.
