Anecdotes

At just 13 years old, in 2004, Magnus Carlsen faced the legendary Garry Kasparov, then the world number one, at a tournament in Reykjavik. The young Norwegian managed to snatch a draw, a feat that made headlines throughout the chess world and revealed a prodigy.

In November 2013, at age 22, Carlsen became world champion by defeating India's Viswanathan Anand in Chennai. He had already reached the top spot in the world Elo rankings back in 2010, at 19, becoming the youngest number one in history at that time.

In 2023, Carlsen voluntarily chose not to defend his world champion title, explaining that he lacked the motivation for the classical format. A rare decision: you don't lose your title, you choose to no longer put it on the line.

Carlsen is also formidable in the rapid and blitz formats: he long held simultaneously the world champion titles in classical, rapid, and blitz games, a dominance very rare in the history of chess.
