Kykeon of the guard, the barley you drink
A thick drink of toasted barley stirred into water, scented with herbs, sometimes spiked with a little wine. Rustic, slightly bitter and refreshing: beaten just before drinking, standing up, between two watches.

When the night is long and the spear heavy, I do not sleep: I beat barley into cold water, I crush wild mint into it, and I drink. If Thasian wine lingers in the wineskin, I pour a splash — but mixed, always mixed, for a man who drinks neat falls before the enemy. Drink a cup of it, and you will stand until dawn.
- •Toasted barley flour — a spoonful (nourishing base)
- •Fresh water — a cup (liquid)
- •Mint or wild pennyroyal — a few leaves (flavoring)
- •Mixed wine (optional) — a splash (enhancement)

Why this dish? Archilochus says he drinks leaning on his spear while on guard. When wine is lacking or one must stay awake, the soldier beats barley into water: kykeon, half-drink half-porridge, quenches thirst and nourishes in one gesture. It is the watchman's potion.

Ingredients (period version)
- Toasted barley flour — a spoonful (nourishing base)
- Fresh water — a cup (liquid)
- Mint or wild pennyroyal — a few leaves (flavoring)
- Mixed wine (optional) — a splash (enhancement)
Ingredients
- Toasted barley flour (or blended barley flakes) — 2 tbsp (nourishing base)
- Fresh water — 250 ml (liquid)
- Fresh mint — 4-5 leaves (flavoring)
- Honey — 1 tsp (optional) (to sweeten bitterness)
- Light red wine mixed with water — 1 tbsp (adult option) (enhancement)
Method
- Stir the toasted barley flour into cold water, whisking vigorously (this beating gives kykeon its name).
- Crush the mint between your fingers and add it.
- Sweeten with a little honey if the bitterness dominates; for an adult version, add the splash of mixed wine.
- Whisk again just before serving, as the barley settles, and drink well chilled.
How it was made : Kykeon ("mixed drink") is attested as early as Homer: barley flour stirred into a liquid, sometimes with grated cheese, honey or herbs. Both a drink and a food, it was used by workers, soldiers, and even featured in certain rites of Demeter. Archilochus' "profane" version remains plausible for a common soldier.
The contemporary twist : Served ice-cold in a small glass, like a "barley-mint smoothie", garnished with a fresh leaf.
