Back to Cerberus
The Chthonic Meal (Enagismos)
In ancient Greece, the powers below are not fed like the gods of the sky. To the dead and the underworld deities—including the guardian Cerberus—the enagismos is dedicated: offerings placed directly on the ground, near tombs or at the mouths of Hades (Cape Taenarum, Lake Avernus), libations poured into a pit, cakes thrown to appease. No starter-main-dessert, but a sequence of offerings: the cake that lulls to sleep, the porridge of funeral seed-sowing, the barley drink of the mysteries, the daily flatbread, and the meat feast of great triumphs.
Signature : Honey and Poppy
Cerberus's signature combination: honey for the sweetness that attracts, poppy seeds (mēkōn) for their soporific virtue. It is through this sweet-narcotic pair that heroes—the Sibyl in the Aeneid, Orpheus, Psyche—lull the three-headed dog's vigilance. An offering cuisine designed not to satisfy hunger, but to appease.
