Anecdotes
In 2003, at just 18 years old and fresh out of high school, LeBron James was selected first overall in the NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, his local franchise in Ohio. The pressure was enormous: nicknamed “The Chosen One” by a magazine while he was still in high school, he carried the hopes of an entire region before ever playing a professional game.
In 2010, LeBron announced his departure from Cleveland during a television special titled “The Decision,” where he declared that he was going to “take his talents to South Beach” to join Miami. This spectacular decision angered Cleveland fans, who burned his jerseys in the streets, but it showed the unprecedented media power of an athlete in the age of social media.
In 2016, LeBron finally kept his promise to bring a title back to Cleveland: the Cavaliers came back from a 3–1 deficit in the Finals against the Golden State Warriors, a feat never before accomplished. His decisive block on Andre Iguodala in the final minutes, nicknamed “The Block,” remains one of the most famous moments in league history.
On February 7, 2023, LeBron James surpassed the career scoring record held since 1989 by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, becoming the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. The game was paused to celebrate the event, and Abdul-Jabbar himself was present in the arena to honor his successor.
Beyond sports, in 2018 LeBron funded the opening of the “I PROMISE School,” a free public school in Akron, his hometown, dedicated to children struggling in school. He devotes part of his fortune to it, demonstrating that an athlete can use his fame to invest in the education of his community.
