Anecdotes

Mariah Carey possesses one of the most extensive vocal ranges in the history of pop music: five full octaves, including the so-called 'whistle register', an extremely rare technique that allows reaching notes almost inaudible to the ordinary human ear. Her sound engineers have testified that some of her highest notes made the windows of recording studios vibrate.

Before being discovered, Mariah Carey worked as a waitress, coat-check girl, and hairdresser in New York to fund her musical dreams. In 1988, at just 18 years old, she handed a demo to Tommy Mottola at a music industry party; he listened to it in his limousine and called her back before he had even gotten home to offer her a contract with Columbia Records.

The song “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, recorded in 1994, has become one of the best-selling Christmas songs of all time with over 16 million copies. It had to wait until 2019 to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, 25 years after its release — an absolute record in the history of the American charts.

In 2001, following a very public breakdown, Mariah Carey made a triumphant comeback in 2005 with the album “The Emancipation of Mimi”, which became the best-selling album of the year in the United States and won three Grammy Awards. This spectacular comeback has since been studied in business schools as a textbook case of artistic and commercial rebirth.

Mariah Carey is one of the few artists to have co-written and co-produced virtually all of her songs since the beginning of her career, a fact long downplayed by her label, which preferred to present her as a mere performer. In her autobiography published in 2020, she recounts her fight for recognition of her creative role in the music industry.
