flipDried Figs and Raisins in Honey, for the Road
Dried Figs and Raisins in Honey, for the Road
Why this dish? On the endless routes from Macedonia to India, dried fruits and honey offered Alexander and his army a compact energy reserve that kept under the Asian sun.
Dried figs and raisins rolled in honey and sesame seeds: a concentrated, lightweight, and imperishable treat that accompanied the long marches.
Thirteen years of roads, do you understand what that means? You do not cross Persia and the Hindu Kush with a full belly. My men carried in their haversacks dried figs, raisins from the past summer, a little honey to bind it all. It does not spoil, it sticks to your body, and when morale flags, a sweet mouthful is worth a speech. Take some, traveler, and march.

How it was made : Dried figs and raisins were among the most common preserved foods in antiquity, easy to transport and very energy-dense. Honey served both as a binder and a preservative. These *trôgalia* (nibbles) also accompanied the *symposion* after the meal.
The contemporary twist : Call them “Hindu Kush energy balls” and present them in a small cloth pouch: the conqueror’s snack for hikers.
