This cake — do not bring it to your mouth first. Flour, honey, sesame kneaded together and shaped by hand: that is the gods' share. I who was Zeus's plaything and delivered by Dionysus know what is owed to the powers: you place the *pelanos* on the altar stone, you speak the god's name, and you give thanks. What you give first to heaven returns as peace upon your house.

Pelanos of Honey and Sesame for the Gods
A small dense cake of flour, honey, and sesame, shaped by hand and intended for the altar. Inspired by Greek food offerings, without reproducing a sacred rite.
Why this dish? Antiope, seduced by Zeus then long punished, was finally freed and even, they say, cured of her madness by Dionysus. Such a life suspended by the gods calls for an offering: the *pelanos* of honey and flour, a humble cake burned or placed on the altar to thank or appease the powers.

Ingredients (period version)
- Wheat flour — two handfuls (structure)
- Honey — generous (sweetness and binder)
- Sesame seeds — a handful (flavor)
- Olive oil — a drizzle (softness)
Ingredients
- Wheat flour — 200 g (structure)
- Honey — 100 g (sweetness and binder)
- Sesame seeds — 3 tbsp (flavor)
- Olive oil — 2 tbsp (softness)
- Water — a little if needed (binder)
Method
- Toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan for a few minutes.
- Mix the flour, sesame, oil, and honey into a firm dough (add a splash of water if too dry).
- Shape small round or wreath-shaped cakes by hand.
- Bake at 170°C for 15–20 minutes until golden.
- Let cool slightly and drizzle with a thread of honey; present on a dedicated dish.
How it was made : The *pelanos* referred to offerings of flour, honey, and oil placed or burned on Greek altars. Many offerings were "bloodless": cakes, grains, fruits, and honey, intended for the gods and sometimes the dead rather than for diners.
The contemporary twist : Serve an edible version at table under the name "Dionysus's Share," arranged on a vine leaf with a drizzle of reduced sweet wine.
