When your arms can no longer pull the oar, it is not neat wine you need, but kykeon. Pour water, toss in barley flour, grate goat cheese on top, sweeten with a little honey, and stir until it thickens. Circe is said to have handed me a cup of it — I offered it to my Argonauts so they could hold out until the next dawn. Drink it down in one go: it's a meal you swallow standing.

How it was made : Kykeon (κυκεών, 'the mixture') is one of the oldest beverages in Greek literature: described in the Iliad and Odyssey, it combined barley, water, cheese, and sometimes wine, honey, or herbs. A ritual version featured in the Eleusinian Mysteries. It was both a restorative and a liquid meal for workers and warriors.
