When the screen burned my eyes, I didn't go for coffee: I blended fruit. A banana, some berries, a little yogurt, and bam — thirty seconds in the blender. That's California talking: we really believed that eating well made you sharper. Drink it right away, nice and cold, before diving back into the code.

Why this dish? The fruit blender is a totem object of 1970s California "health" culture, popularized by West Coast juice bars. For a researcher who values light, energizing food between work sessions, the smoothie is the ideal break. It evokes Goldberg's refreshing daily life.

How it was made : Juice bars and smoothie shops flourished in California from the 1960s-70s, part of the natural foods movement. The home blender became the star appliance of "health" cuisine, transforming fruit and yogurt into a quick meal-drink.
The contemporary twist : Serve it as a layered smoothie in a clear glass — a pixelated gradient worthy of the Alto's bitmap screen.
