Bletchley’s Chained Strong Tea
Why this dish? Turing was so attached to his mug that he chained it to a radiator at Bletchley Park so no one would steal it. Strong black tea, lukewarm and brewed strong, was the uninterrupted ritual of the cryptanalysts during long vigils.
A strong-brewed black tea, served with a splash of milk. Not a drawing-room refinement: a warm, quick fuel kept within reach for hours of concentration.
My mug, I kept it chained to a radiator — not out of miserliness, but because in a hut full of people, a mug that disappears is a mug lost to science. I wanted the tea strong, almost black, with a dash of milk, and lukewarm rather than scalding: one has no time to wait when the rotors aren’t waiting. A good tea is like a good hypothesis: without excessive ceremony, but it must hold up.
- •Black loose-leaf tea (rationed) — a heaped spoonful (infusion)
- •Boiling water — a large mug (extraction)
- •Milk — a splash (soften bitterness)
- •Sugar — rarely, if the ration book allows (optional)

Ingredients (period version)
- Black loose-leaf tea (rationed) — a heaped spoonful (infusion)
- Boiling water — a large mug (extraction)
- Milk — a splash (soften bitterness)
- Sugar — rarely, if the ration book allows (optional)
Ingredients
- Strong black tea (Assam or English Breakfast) — 1 heaped tsp or 1 tea bag (infusion)
- Simmering water — 300 ml (extraction)
- Whole milk — 1 splash (15 ml) (roundness)
- Sugar — to taste (optional)
Method
- Scald the mug or teapot so it stays hot.
- Add the tea, pour in the simmering water, and steep for 4 to 5 minutes (strong).
- Strain, add a splash of cold milk.
- Drink without ceremony; keep the mug within reach for the entire work session.
How it was made : Tea was rationed (about 2 ounces per week per adult), so it was precious. The “milk in first” (MIF) debate already animated the huts. At Bletchley, the NAAFI and tea trolleys kept the teams going day and night.
The contemporary twist : Served in a vintage enamel mug, with a handwritten label saying “property of — do not steal”, a nod to Turing’s chain.
