The road to the Isthmus is long and the brigands do not announce themselves: a man must be able to eat without stopping. So I mixed ground barley with fresh water, grated a little goat cheese into it, and crushed a few pennyroyal leaves to revive the heart. Stir, drink from the cup itself, and set off again. Believe me, stranger: this modest drink carried me further than many feasts.

How it was made : The kykeon ("mixture") is attested as early as Homer: in the Iliad, one is prepared with Pramnian wine, grated goat cheese, and barley flour. The simple water version was the meal-drink of peasants, walkers, and soldiers; a ritual version also featured in the Eleusinian Mysteries.
