Soft-Boiled Eggs, Toast and Strong Morning Tea
A breakfast reduced to essentials: one or two soft-boiled eggs, buttered toast soldiers, a touch of marmalade and strongly brewed tea. Sobriety made into a meal.

You see, I never had time to waste at table. An egg, two soldiers, a cup of strong tea, and you're ready to face the day — that's all a woman with work to do needs. My father ran the grocery in Grantham and taught us that you waste nothing, not even a minute. Butter, you spread just enough; tea, you let it steep as it should, not a second more. Discipline starts first thing in the morning, believe me.

Why this dish? Thatcher was known for a minimalist breakfast — eggs, toast and tea — eaten quickly to get back to work. Before coming to power, she even followed an egg-based diet. This morning asceticism sums up her personal discipline.

- Meanwhile, toast the bread and cut into sticks (soldiers).
- Butter one slice, spread a little marmalade on the other.
- Steep the tea for 3 to 4 minutes in simmering water, add a splash of milk if desired.
- Cut off the top of the egg, dip the soldiers, and enjoy without lingering.
How it was made : In 20th-century England, the soft-boiled egg with soldiers was the quintessential childhood breakfast. Tea, a national staple, was drunk strong and with milk. In modest, frugal families like the Roberts, breakfast remained simple and without excess.
The contemporary twist : Serve the egg in a vintage porcelain egg cup and align the soldiers neatly: a nod to the order and rigor of the Iron Lady.
