One does not cross the Cretan sea with fresh bread: it molds before you see the coast. But the fig dried under the Attic sun, on the other hand, defies time. I had them perfumed with thyme, bound with a little honey, and rolled in sesame, then filled the boat's baskets. In dark days, when the black sail led us toward the Minotaur, a handful of these figs restored the courage of my companions. Sweetness, sometimes, is a weapon.

How it was made : Ischades (dried figs) were a flagship product of Attica, so renowned that their export was reportedly regulated. Sun-dried, they kept for months and were a common travel ration and snack (tragema). Honey and salt served everywhere as natural preservatives before any refrigeration.
