Before shutting myself away for hours with my wires and galvanometer, I would gladly take this hot soup on harsh mornings. You heat the beer without boiling, spice it and add a little sugar, then thicken it with beaten egg — the whole art is not to curdle it! Poured over toasted bread, it warms the body and clears the mind. Do not smile: a chilled scholar measures poorly.

How it was made : Biersuppe was an ordinary breakfast in Germanic households before coffee and tea became widespread. Beer, safer than water and nourishing, was heated with egg, spices, and bread to provide a hot, energy-rich meal at dawn.
