Anecdotes
Before becoming a geologist, Charles Lyell studied law and briefly worked as a lawyer in London. But his eyesight was fragile, and reading legal files tired his eyes. He gave up the bar to roam the countryside, hammer in hand, observing rocks out in the open air.
His book *Principles of Geology* accompanied Charles Darwin on his voyage aboard the Beagle. Darwin read the work during the crossing and used it to interpret the formations he observed in South America. Lyell later became a close friend of Darwin, even though he took a long time to fully accept the theory of evolution.
Lyell championed the idea that the Earth was extraordinarily ancient, shaped very slowly by forces still at work today: rain, rivers, volcanoes and earthquakes. This view, known as uniformitarianism, clashed with those who believed in a young Earth transformed by sudden catastrophes.
To illustrate the slowness of natural processes, Lyell used the Temple of Serapis near Naples: its marble columns were bored through by marine shellfish several metres up, proving that the ground had sunk beneath the sea and then risen again. He made it the emblem of his book.
Charles Lyell was knighted and received the title of baronet in 1864. Upon his death in 1875, he was buried in Westminster Abbey, an honour reserved for the greatest British figures, a sign of the immense respect that science and the nation held for him.
