Sumo de Múcua, Baobab Travel Drink

Why this dish? Graça Machel spends her life traveling — New York at the United Nations, Johannesburg, Lisbon — while keeping her attachment to southern Africa. Baobab fruit juice (múcua), thirst-quenching and nourishing, is the drink of long roads and Mozambican bush: a taste of childhood you carry with you.

Bebida (refreshing drink)

Cool, tangy drink made from the white pulp of the baobab fruit, diluted in water and sweetened with sugar. Rich in vitamin C, it quenches thirst under the heat and accompanies journeys.

The baobab, the tree that has stood forever, gives us múcua. You break the shell, collect the white pulp around the seeds, and let it dissolve in water until it becomes tangy like a morning fruit. A little sugar, and there you have something to keep you going. Wherever I travel, in the halls of great nations, I think of that freshness: simple, from home, and good for children and elders alike.
