The flight lasted about eight minutes and covered three kilometers. All the animals landed safely, and the experiment proved that living creatures could survive at altitude.
Joseph-Michel is said to have conceived the idea for the balloon while watching shirts billow above a fire in a fireplace. In November 1782, he fashioned a small silk bag and held it over a flame: the bag rose toward the ceiling. This seemingly unremarkable observation was the starting point of a revolution in human history.
During the first human flight on November 21, 1783, the physicist Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes flew over Paris for twenty-five minutes aboard the hot air balloon.
